If you’re a PC gamer, you can understand how important it is to have enough storage space on your PC. Sufficient storage space will help you store your games and perform the rest of your work and media storage effectively. Computer hardware enthusiasts of all levels are familiar with the form factors of standard hard drives such as bulky 3.5 inch mechanical hard drives (or HDDs) and slimmer 2.5-inch solid-state drives (SSDs).

It’s safe to imagine that you also know about SATA (SSD or HDD), a bus interface used to connect a motherboard to various drives. These are the most common form factors and connectivity options for gaming computers. M2 (also known as m.2 and M.2) and NVMe drives are new formats of SSD storage that are gaining popularity in the latest PC builds. So let’s see is m.2 iworth it or not?

What is an M.2 SSD?

SSD data storage is the most common use for M2, but some desktop PC peripherals such as WiFi cards are also available in the M2 form factor. It replaces the previous 2.5-inch storage drive that was mounted in a separate bay and connected to the motherboard via a SATA cable.

M2 SSDs that use  SATA interfaces are not always faster than 2.5-inch drives.  These modern SSDs lay flat on the motherboard when connected, rather than sticking out like graphics cards and RAM chips (or traditional hard drives and SSDs). M2 drives occupy less space and provide a cleaner and more organized PC interior with fewer cables. Make sure the M2 drive uses the NVMe (NonVolatile Memory Express) interface protocol for faster speeds. NVMe-based SSDs provide read and write speeds up to 2GB / sec.

Is M.2 SSD worth it?

Most SATA-based SSDs offer up to about 500 MB / s. Your motherboard may not have an M2 slot suitable for both types (SATA and NVMe). Even if your motherboard has the slots, you don’t want to get a pricier NVMe drive if the motherboard can only access data using the SATA protocol. It makes sense to either get a new motherboard along with an NVMe M2 SSD or utilize SATA.

The NVMe Interface Protocol

NVME represents non-volatile memory express, which refers to how data moves instead of the shape of the drive itself. The main types that differ from existing SATA standards are the main ones on the PCIe interface of the motherboard drawing. You can get significantly faster data transfer rates than SATA. Depending on the manufacturer of the NVME drive, up to 5 to 6 times the rate of saturation is faster.

nvme interface protocol

Several NVME drives match the standard PCIe motherboard slots similar to graphics cards, but most NVME drives use  M.2 form factors. Considering faster velocity, NVME drives are usually more expensive than standard 2.5 SSD equivalents. M.2 When planning a drive, it is crucial to obtain a hard drive or NVMebased drive while updating the game PC. Your motherboard may not have a corresponding M.2 slot for both types (SATA and NVME-M.2 drives are often given slightly different), and this is so. Also, you don’t want to get money with PRICIERIC NVME.

You can only access data from the SATA protocol (that all motherboards will not enable PCIe data transfer). The speed assignment granted through the NVME protocol mainly has the speed assignment given through the NVME protocol primarily for data and writes random reading and writing. It writes a remarkable speed thrust random reading rather than the SATA drive for a more expensive NVME-M.2 drive on the NVME drive.

Is M.2 Worth It?

To be honest, there are different opinions about this. Some say it doesn’t make a big difference, while others think it makes a big difference. PC motherboards and other specifications are subjective as they vary from gamer to gamer.  According to some, M2 is worth it. It’s not that expensive, and most M2 drives these days are NVMe, which is faster than its SATA counterpart.

How much faster is M.2 vs SSD

M2 is an excellent way to add memory. Otherwise, 2.5 SSDs will meet your gaming needs.  SATA specifications are not used. Instead, it’s faster because it connects directly to the PCIe bus. This will load the game faster but not generate any more frames. It means that SSDs are fast, which means that maps load faster,  screens load faster, assets load faster, characters load faster, and everything else is at the core of the gameplay.

However, it never increases the frame rate, lowers the temperature, or transfers data (from RAM to VRAM via the CPU). In addition to the game, it dramatically improves your daily tasks and startup/shutdown. I want to load  Fortnite faster. So I will buy an M2 SSD. Someone said that It’s a good idea to identify if the drive is NVMe and determine if you need an M2 SSD. M2 SSDs only affect load time, not game performance directly. Moreover, while upgrading from HDD to  SSD is a big difference, upgrading from SSD to NVMe is not much different for the game.

After you’ve figured out what you need, you can start looking into M.2 SATA and M.2 NVMe SSDs. Again, if gaming and ordinary computer use are your primary worries, an M.2 SATA drive should suffice. If you want to get the most out of your computer’s processing power, or if you plan on performing anything that necessitates rapid sequential read and writes rates, an NVMe drive is the way to go.M.2 and NVMe drives are becoming increasingly popular — and less expensive – and are on the approach of being the standard recommendation for new PC setups by 2020.

While going with a standard HDD or SSD can save you some money, the difference isn’t significant.M.2 refers to the form factor; it can be on the PCI Express bus or the SATA bus, but the PCI Express bus is quicker. In terms of day-to-day operations and gaming, there isn’t much of a difference. If you’re designing a small PC or have SATA port limits, m.2 is an intelligent option to expand storage; otherwise, 2.5 SSDs will be enough for gaming. They help the game load faster, but they don’t always result in additional frames.
